Eugene was a summer school graduate with the Class of 1949. However, he did not start high school at Edison. He attended De La Salle High School before graduating from Edison.

Eugene enlisted in the Navy in 1949. After 1 year of active duty and 8 months on active reserve, Eugene was recalled to active duty on 1Feb1951.

Eugene was a deck crew member on the aircraft carrier USS Antietam which was operating with Task Force 77 off the coast of Korea.

On 4Nov1951 a Navy fighter jet crashed while landing on the carrier.

Eugene was 1 of the 3 crewmen killed in the crash.

Eugene’s remains were returned to Minnesota for burial.

Eugene is buried at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
