In August, George and his unit relocated to Espiritu Santo. From August through November, VMO-251 performed about every mission in the book, from full service air base support, ferrying combat aircraft back and forth to Guadalcanal and other bases, and providing aircrews for observation missions on cruiser-based aircraft.

On 19Sep1942 George was again uninjured after crashing at takeoff during a observation flight.

On 8Dec1942 George was killed while piloting a Grumman F4F when it crashed on takeoff from Henderson Field on Guadalcanal.

George was originally buried on Guadalcanal. In 1949 his remains were transferred to the National Memorial Cemetary of the Pacific in Honolulu, HI.
