Marvin’s path to the Navy is unknown. No records of where he attended Navy basic training have been found.

In early 1945 he earned a promotion while he was stationed at Johnston Island Atoll.

Located approximately 750 miles Southwest of Hawaii, Johnston Island Atoll served primarily as a U.S. military support facility during 1945 in the final year of World War II. It functioned as a key logistical hub air and naval operations across the vast Pacific theater.

After the war ended in August 1945, Johnston Island Atoll became part of the return pipeline, processing bombers and crews heading back to the U.S. mainland.

It is assumed the Marvin was still on the island when he was wounded by an accidental explosion of an artillery shell. He was hospitalized due to his injuries and died on 2Dec1945.

Marvin was originally buried in Hawaii. A memorial service was held in his honor on 16Dec1945.

In October 1947 his remains were returned to Minnesota for reburial. On 28Oct1947 he became the first service member from Minneapolis returned from overseas to be reburied.

Marvin is buried at Hillside Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
