Richard graduated with the Class of 1954. He was active in sports and clubs, and he was strong academically.






After gradation Richard attended the University of Minnesota for 3 years. He then entered the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Unit: B Company – 8th Engineer Battalion – 1st Cavalry Division
Richard’s path to the Army started when he entered the United States Military Academy in July 1957. He graduated with the Class of 1961.
After graduation he went on active duty with the Army Corps of Engineers. His assignments included time with the 91st Combat Engineer Battalion, the 7th Logistical Command in Korea, the Engineer Advanced Course at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia, and finally at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, the Headquarters of 101st Airborne Division.
On 29Jul1966 he was sent to Vietnam as part of the 8th Engineer Battalion. While in Vietnam Richard and the 8th Battalion constructed roads, airfields, and fire bases to support combat operations.
On 10May1967 Richard was killed by enemy sniper fire while supporting operations in Ninh Thuan Province, South Vietnam.


Richard is buried at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN.
