Military Service

Rate: Painter 2nd Class
Branch: United States Navy
Unit: Carrier Aircraft Service Unit No. 3
Edward enlisted in the Navy on 24Aug1942. It is unknown where he took his basic training. After basic training it is likely that he was assigned to Carrier Aircraft Service Unit No. 3 (CASU-3).
CASU-3 was commissioned on 1Apr1943 at Naval Air Station Seattle in Seattle, Washington and remained based there throughout 1943 and most of 1944. Its primary role during this period was to provide maintenance, repair, and logistical support for carrier air groups that were training or refitting on the U.S. West Coast before deploying to the Pacific Fleet.

CASU-3 relocated to Naval Air Station Pearl Harbor in Hawaii from June 1944 to October 1944.
From November 1944 to March 1945 they were based at Henderson Field on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands.
And finally, from April 1945 until 1945 they were based at Ulithi Atoll in the Caroline Islands.
After the Japanese surrender, the unit returned to the United States and was decommissioned on 15Dec1945 at Seattle, Washington.
It appears that Ted did not return to Seattle with his unit.
Ted died on 17Dec1945 in San Diego, California. While he was on active duty at the time of his death, the circumstances are unknown at this time.
Ted’s remains were returned to Minnesota for burial.

Ted is buried at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN.
